About Doctor Disk The Hong Kong Company, Doctor Disk Limited, was
closed down at the end of July 2002. Phil Smith and his wife Wendy are Australians who arrived in Hong Kong in March 1989 at which time both worked for different branches of Computer Power, one of Australia's largest computer software and sevices companies. In 1992 a shelf company named Wah Ming Service Limited was purchased and from October 1992 Computer Power contracted Wah Ming Service Limited to supply the services of Phil Smith. In evenings and weekends occasional work was done for other clients recovering data from damaged disks and setting up computersystems, trouble shooting, etc. Phil left the full-time employment of Computer Power June 1993 and commenced working independently. During the next several years he was called in by Computer Power on a part-time basis as an instructor for various courses. The name Doctor Disk was first applied by one of my clients for whom I had recovered several years of research work that had been lost on a defective disk. I immediately applied for registration of Doctor Disk as our business name. Being fairly unknown when we started, the first few months of business were fairly lean, but by the second quarter of 1994 many referrals were being made by our satisfied customers and people started having to be content with house calls being made the next day or the following day. Our intention was never to be a supplier of computers, but lots of clients who had been ripped off by disreputable computer shops kept asking us to go and buy their new computers for them. Until May 1995 these were bought from several manufacturers in Shatin and Kowloon. In May 1995 we started working closely with Systems Xpress, a company which had started in a small shop in Shatin in April 1994 and was found to be building truly excellent quality clone computers at a reasonable price. Since then we have spent more than HK$ 7 million purchasing SX-built computers for our clients. Early in 1997 we commenced putting Doctor Disk badges on the cases of Systems Xpress computers and marketing them as Doctor Disk computers. Warranty work that requires the machine being brought back to the workshop is carried out by the experts at Systems Xpress although Phil Smith or his assistants usually transports the computers to and from the client's premises. In May 1998 we found that we were so busy, clients often had to book services up to a week in advance. By the end of June 1998 so many Westerners had left Hong Kong due to the Asian economic crisis, that we were again able to give same-day or next-day service. In October 1997 the name of the company was changed from Wah Ming Service Limited to Doctor Disk Limited or, in Chinese; . For the past several years a lot of our work has related to getting our clients connected to the Internet. We are now helping them to set up web pages as well. Check our Services and
Rates page to learn more. Doctor Disk Limited was closed down at the end of July 2002.
